Hilton Head Island Golf
The word golf in a thesaurus, the first synonym listed would be “Hilton Head Island”. O.K., maybe not. But it should be.
Everyone probably knows that the golf here on Hilton Head Island is plentiful and world class caliber. Pros from around the world come here to play because of the quality and choice of courses. Amateurs will definitely get better, especially if they take advantage of a great lesson or two from one of the superior golf pros we selfishly keep here all to ourselves. And the average lover of golf? Well, welcome to paradise, my friend! All the resort areas on the island provide excellent golfing opportunities while you are here. Have your vacation rental company find you a condo right on the golf course of your choice, and be prepared to spend some quality time with your clubs and the beautiful sub tropical foliage that surrounds you at each tee. You will probably meet an alligator or two also. Don’t worry, though, they will give you your ball back. Usually.
The most famous course on the island is Harbour Town Golf Links, located in Sea Pines Resort. Harbour Town Golf Links hosts the nationally televised Heritage Golf Tournament each year, right after the Masters’. Come rub elbows with the pros (maybe some of their skill will rub off on you!) during this popular and exciting tournament.
Hilton Head Island is so famous for its amazing golf courses, even if you are not a golfer, you will feel compelled to hit a bucket of balls or ride down the 18th fairway in one of those neat little carts. Who cares if you have no clue what you are doing, you are on Hilton Head Island, and here we do golf, better than anyone else.
When people think of the prototype planned-development resort on the East Coast, they typically think "Sea Pines" and then they think "Golf!"

For nearly fifty years, the game has drawn visitors to the Resort's three public courses. The Ocean Course, a George Cobb design, opened in 1962 as the Island's first golf course. Its fifteenth hole is legendary, with magnificent oceanfront vistas beyond the greens. It is also a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary course, a rare opportunity to play among the wildlife.
As the first course built on Hilton Head Island, the Ocean Course at The Sea Pines Resort embraces the true coastal golf experience. |
Designed by legendary course architect Pete Dye, Heron Point is nothing short of a modern work of art, the centerpiece of any Hilton Head Island golf vacation. Fairways have been reshaped into dramatic angles and shifting elevations -- while surfaces are a mixture of sand, mulch, limestone, and different grasses offering a kaleidoscope of appealing color changes. As the second Hilton Head Island golf course at The Sea Pines Resort designed by Dye, Heron Point lives up to its prestigious reputation with challenging new features.

Harbour Town Golf Links is certainly one of the best-known landmark courses on the PGA Tour! Its 18th hole is among the most challenging, too, with the candy cane lighthouse standing vigil at the harbor's mouth just beyond the green. Shifting breezes across Calibogue Sound make this final shot a test of skill rather than strength. Host to the Heritage Classic (now dubbed the Verizon Heritage Tournament) since 1969, Harbour Town continues to inspire beginners and established pros. |
